New Alzheimer’s Medication

The FDA just approved a second medication that actually treats Alzheimer’s disease by removing the abnormal proteins responsible for the brain damage that results in the symptoms.  However, there are going to be many barriers to prescribing it.  I recommend consideration of those barriers (e.g., cost), as well as weighing the potential risks vs the benefits.  Nevertheless, this medication may represent a real hope to those who qualify for it in the fac of a devastating illness.  Keep in mind that only patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and “mild” dementia will qualify.
